Alter Building Design, Inc. is a full-service architecture firm focused on both exterior and interior design. We are committed to communicating and collaborating with the client--whether the project is large or small in scope, residential or commercial, new construction or the renovation of an existing building.
Alter Building Design projects include the design of Temple Emanu-el on the University of Alabama campus; Daystar Family Church's new building for contemporary worship; extensive renovations to the McDonald Hughes Community Center; and the modern retrofit of an old downtown drugstore into Harrison Galleries, which earned an AIA Gulf States Region Merit Award. The firm has also completed several residential projects both large and small: a garage with studio apartment, private residences, and off-campus student duplexes and townhouses.
Alter Building Design, Inc. was formed by Elizabeth Alter in 2001. She earned a Masters in Architecture in 1998 from the University of Texas in Austin where she was awarded the AIA Henry Adams Certificate for Excellence in the Study of Architecture. She majored in Architecture at Yale University, completing her BA in 1988, and then taught art and design for three years--first at a private school in Connecticut and then in Botswana in southern Africa as a Peace Corps volunteer. She also taught architecture studio classes at Mississippi State for three semesters.
